All web sites need a "host"... or "server" where they reside so people from around the world can access your pages via numerous high-speed modems. I recommend two choices as regards to where to place your web site.
1.• Most Internet Service Providers (ISP) furnish you with a storage area where your web site can be housed free of charge. This sounds great, but there is a slight downside. Your web site address will be tied into your Internet Service Provider. • If at some future date you decide you want to change to another ISPs, your web site will also have to move, and your web address changes. All the work you did in promoting that address is now down the drain. However, the upside is you don't have to pay a monthly charge. Note 1: I usually recommend you select this particular way of "hosting" if your web site is a "personal" one; or pertains to a local business that does not require state, national, or world wide presence. Note 2: If your ISP does not provide you with free web storage space not to worry. Yahoo/Geocities.com will provide you with 15MG of free web site storage. • Click here to review a listing of local area Internet Service Providers. Services and prices vary so a cursory review will be to your benefit.
2.Having your very own web site address (domain name) is, of course, the best way to go for several reasons: • More professional -- large businesses that require a national or world wide presence really need their own web domain. • Easier to promote -- Your customers will be able to remember your name. i.e., "www.yourcompanyname.com" • Transportable -- If you move around the world, or just decide you want to change servers, your domain name goes with you. • The downside for owners of "personal" or "local" business web site is the cost. Generally speaking, you will have to pay approximately $35.00 per month plus annual registration fees, or a annual fee of approximately $450.00.
CONCLUSION:If you have a large business that depends on State, National, or Worldwide presence then having your own "domain name" site with its associated costs is the only way to go. However, if your site is a "personal one" or you have a "small business" that services the local community then I suggest that you use a "Internet Service Provider" that furnishes you with "free" web site storage space. If you are interested in a "specific domain" site click here to see if the name you desire is still available.
