Ida Bell (Cheatham) Manor fell heir to that part of the plantation on which her father, John Archie and his brother, Matt Cheatham, together with several slaves who were also carpenters, built their ancestral home. It was interrupted by the Civil War and John Archie went off to the war. The Yankees came through burning homes and crops, but one of the Yankee officers protectede their home. It was believed that the reason was that he was a Mason. This old home, built of cypress, with wooden pegs, square nails, hand-made brick, which was originally two-story, has withstood the Civil War and two tornadoes. It is now owned by Mrs. W.E. Allgood, Sr., who is the granddaughter of John Archie Cheatham, and his brother, Matt, the original owner. John Archie Cheatham, went all over the country building houses and gins.
