Taylor Tid Bits

The following information was passed down through "word of mouth." The validity of this information must be scrutinized carefully since stories have a way of changing over a period of time. Nevertheless, it would be foolish of us not to document these stories since it is the only connection we have with the past. If you have stories you would like to have posted here please contact us at our E-mail address: Kickhome@aol.com

1. It was said that when Mary Ann Taylor was a child in Mississippi she was kidnapped and held for ransom.

2. Elizabeth Taylor Garcia, daughter of Mary Ann Taylor, use to say that she was a "Taylor and Baylor" on her mother's side. However, Maria M. Herrera said that someone told her that it sounded like "Lennon or Linnon."

3. Some of the old timers believe that Mary Ann's grandfather was named Jim. We don't know if it was Henry or Margaret's father.

4. Cynthia Taylor Hilburn remembered a story that when she was a baby her mother went dry and could not nurse her. James Willborn would take fresh cow milk by horseback to her mother every day so Cynthia could be fed. The Hilburn and Willborn farms were only a few miles apart.

5. John B. Taylor and Jesus Garcia, Mary Ann Taylor's husband, were partners in the live stock business. This appears to be a true story since we found that they both filed for the same live stock brand. Plus, Mary Ann filed for her own live stock brand. Maybe this was done so they could separate the family and business livestock. The "Brand" book can still be viewed in the Atascosa County Court House.

6. The children of Martha Wilborn Hilburn told a story of when Mary Ann Taylor Garcia was chased by a bear. This happened in the early 1870's when she went down to the spring to get some water for family washing. While she was there she noticed a bear watching her. She did some fancy maneuvering to avoid the bear and ran back to the cabin as fast as she could with the bear chasing her. Fortunately she made it back and closed the door before the bear could catch her. The bear tried to bump the door down, but it was strong enough to keep him out and he gave up right away.

The following information (items 7 - 10) was furnished Shelia Taylor Maines by Minnie and Bernice Qualls around 1983.

7. Margaret Taylor was born in either Louisiana or Scotland. They believe that Henry and Margaret Taylor both died in Atascosa County although they haven't been able to locate their graves. [ does anyone know where Henry and Margaret are buried?]

8. Charlie Taylor is buried in Cynthia Hilburn's plot at the Mission in San Antonio. [what mission?]

9. James Taylor married to Malissa Jane Slaughter in Live Oak County, Tx? Is Malissa and Mary J. one in the same? When were they married?

10. Josephine Elizabeth Taylor married to S.W. Slaughter in Live Oak County? When were they married? Is this Josephine related to Henry Taylor? Remember, Mary Ann Taylor named one of her daughters Josephine.
